Uzoma Egemba, a guardian, has been placed on remand at the Owerri Correctional Center after being accused of scalding his 12-year-old maid Chimkamso Ekeocha's body and buttocks for using his kids' bicycles.
Egemba was arraigned by the state's police on Wednesday and then remanded by P.C. Nnoromole of the Owerri Magistrate's Court.
The judge remanded the defendant and set a hearing date of July 20 to hear the Department of Public Prosecutions' report after claiming that she lacked the authority to hear the case.
The magistrate had the constitutional authority to hear the case, according to the accused's attorney, K. U. Alisigwe, but the jurist insisted that she lacked the jurisdiction to do so.
The magistrate reminded him that she was not recording him as Alisigwe continued.
Ogechi, the attorney for the police, who had taken out a remand notice, concurred with the magistrate that she lacked the authority to hear the case.

Following the global success of a video shot by the victim's instructor, Egemba was taken into custody last week.

After Nigerians, including the state chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, came to her aid, the minor had been treated and released from the hospital.
